Wishing on Europe

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Single Market. Under the banner “Together for new growth”, a week-long series of events across the EU, from 15 to 20 October 2012, will give an opportunity to policy-makers and citizens to discuss the achievements and challenges of the single market and come up with new ideas. However, the communication message appears to be out of tune with the present atmosphere. The turmoil happening in several countries (Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy), especially that stirred up by the youth, tells a story of disappointment with all has been achieved in the last 20 years; less certitude for the future, less investment in education, less social services, less jobs. An added problem is caused by the confusion that most of the continent’s people do between the Single Market, the European Union and the Eurozone. The iceberg of discontent could hit, and hit irreparably, part or the entire European infrastructure.
